The star symbol, often used in team sports to indicate victories in particular competitions, has always been a distinguishing feature of the Joe armchair designed by De Pas, D’Urbino, Lomazzi. First branded on leather, then embroidered in special editions in denim and faux fur, today it is the generating sign of the rugs dedicated to the iconic armchair. Stella and Stellina, in grey and navy blue hues, are a tribute to the historic uniform of the New York Yankees, just as the armchair for which the star was born is itself a tribute to a myth of American popular culture, the key player of the New York team, Joe DiMaggio.

On the occasion of Milan Design Week 2023, Centro Studi Poltronova renews its synergy with Mosca Partners for Design Variations, this time crossing the threshold of the Palazzo del Circolo Filologico Milanese in the heart of the Brera Design District. From 17 to 23 April, the Tuscan company will take centre stage. In the large and evocative Liberty Hall, under the luminous eye of a suggestive skylight, in a maze of rooms suspended in space and time, iconic objects and unusual new proposals will be displayed as if they had jumped out of one of the over ten thousand volumes of the library of the city`s oldest cultural association that has its headquarters here. With ULTRAFAVOLA, inspired by its own “best seller”, the Ultrafragola mirror designed by Ettore Sottsass, the Centro Studi Poltronova, just like in Lewis Carroll`s novel Through the Looking Glass and what Alice Found There, invites you to go beyond reflective surfaces to discover the magical dimension of part of its fantastic product catalogue.

Joe is a big comfortable chair in the form of a giant baseball glove, mounted on invisible wheels. With this project the designers, inspired by the poetics of Pop Art, gave material form to their admiration for the legendary American baseball star Joe DiMaggio. With a courageous shift of scale, they transformed the glove into a welcoming place to sit, inserting a hyperrealist figure borrowed from the world of art into the domestic environment.

🥎 Joe at Slamp’s first flagship store in Milan
.
The Joe baseball glove by Centro Studi Poltronova is an open hand towards the luminous “sky” of Slamp, the international lighting design brand that opened its first flagship store during Milan Design Week last June in the Durini district of Via Larga 2.
The super-comfortable armchair (De Pas, D’Urbino, Lomazzi) and its pouf/footstool (D’Urbino, Lomazzi) are among the furnishing accessories that Slamp has thought up to support and spread the language of light. Joeand Joe Ball are co-protagonists of the exhibition space, representing the superlative poetics, virtuosity and tailoring that have been part of Slamp’s DNA since its creation in the early 1990s.
The collaboration is therefore intended to underline the excellence of Made in Italy, the longevity of ideas capable of writing architectural and design solutions without renouncing originality, and aiming at going beyond, at giving depth and further meaning to the world of furniture.
Slamp and Poltronova: a collaboration that has already conquered a showcase and will metaphorically and actually shed light on real works of art by great designers and masters of architecture.
